Robust occupational health and safety management not only reduces the risk of accidents and injury, but has brought significant benefits to many organisations. Despite this, many organisations still fail to manage the discipline effectively.
As a result of major accidents at work in recent years, greater emphasis has been placed on the management of occupational health and safety (OH&S) in legislation, which all employers MUST embrace. Any organisation with five or more employees must carry out health and safety risk assessments and document their findings. Acting on those findings is essential if an organisation is to minimise the risk of accidents and exposure to penalties.
Organisations are increasingly interested in achieving and demonstrating sound OH&S compliance. Organisations want to control their OH&S risks, consistent with their OH&S policy and objectives. Many organisations have undertaken OH&S reviews or audits to assess performance. On their own, however, these reviews and audits may not be sufficient to provide an organisation with the assurance that its performance meets legal and policy requirements.
Standards and best practices in OH&S are offered by BSI, HSE and IOSH which cover all of the many pieces of legislation and directives on OH&S. BS OHSAS 18002 provide generic assistance for establishing, implementing or improving an OH&S management system and demonstrates successful implementation of BS OHSAS 18001.
