Putting the GREEN into ICT

Two big challenges are facing us today: the need to keep carbon emissions from powered equipment to a minimum, and making sure electricity bills are as low as possible in the face of ever spiralling prices.

The solutions team at AiM has been working on ways in which we can put the green into ICT and allow clients to save money at the same time. We are therefore pleased to present a new software utility we call PCShutdown. As it suggests, this utility allows a PC to turn itself off remotely and automatically at a scheduled time. This will be particularly useful where PCs are in use but are not necessarily all turned off at the end of the day.

Based upon manufacturer’s data and current electricity tariffs, ensuring that a single average PC is turned off outside of working hours and weekends during a 12 month period could save 50kg of CO2 emissions and reduce electricity bills by as much as GBP 21.00. So for an average size operation of 20 PCs the savings could be as high as 1000kg of CO2 and GBP 420.00 over 12 months.

PCShutdown software has passed all necessary AiM quality criteria checks and works on all PC models. For networks it is loaded onto and deployed from the server, followed by some work on each PC for activation. It can also be installed straight onto stand-alone PCs. Setting a time for the PC to shut down will be scheduled as part of the installation.
